It might seem like a secret, but it really isn’t. Each company decides for itself how transparent it wants to be about this information, but, generally speaking, the materials used in period underwear don’t differ greatly from one another.
Let’s start with the underwear we wear every day. They’re made from a main fabric, which is used to make the underwear itself. That’s what you can see on the outside. And then there’s a small piece of fabric on the inside which, in the vast majority of cases, is cotton, although bamboo and polyamide are also used. It needs to be a fabric that is gentle on sensitive skin whilst also being breathable and absorbent. In other words, normal everyday underwear consists of two layers: the outer layer and the inner layer.
Period underwear usually has a total of three or four layers. The two you’re already familiar with, and two more on the inside:
• Underneath the cotton fabric (or the small inner lining), there is an absorbent layer which can be made of various materials. This depends on the brand and the model of the panties. It may be made of cotton, polyester, viscose, Tencel or polyamide. Its purpose is to absorb and retain.
• The fourth layer is designed to prevent leaks. A synthetic fabric is used in all cases. As it is a fabric and not just ‘a nylon bag’, it is, in a way, breathable, which is excellent. And yet it still prevents fluids from passing through. It is a very practical invention. This waterproof yet breathable fabric has two names: PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) or TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane).
And that’s basically it. It’s no secret, but it’s still brilliant. It’s a relatively new invention, but it’s growing exponentially at a rapid pace. In my opinion, this is partly due to humanity’s natural tendency to always seek something better and to evolve, and partly due to the stage of development humanity is currently at in its search for a more eco-friendly and conscious solution.
